Winter tires and wheels

I am looking for new wheels and tires for ice and snow for my 04' TL. Would you recommend to stay with 17 inches wheels or go for the 16 inches wheels and easier to find winter tires?

I helped a guy at work last year get a set for his TL. He bought 16" alloys on Tire Rack with Winterforce snows. I believe the entire package shipped was just about $1k.
