Just a tiny fraction of Genreal Motors customers have returned their cars for refunds under the automaker's heavily advertisied money back guarantee program - and most buyers aren't even choosing to participate in the plan, opting for a rebate instead.

About 400 vehicle buyers, or less than 1 percent of sales since the program launched, have signed up for GM's 60 day test drive. The rest took a $500 rebate instead.

Of those 400 vehicles, just 15 have been returned in the first week since customers could begin doing so.

I find this number surprisingly low.

According to a General Motors spokesman, most people who returned a car under its 60 day guarantee are exchanging it for another model.

Approximately 200 vehicles have been now returned under the money back offer. Most are by customers who changed their minds about their needs, such as favoring an automatic transmission over a manual.

Again, I thought the numbers would be much higher.

wow -- you're harsh when it comes to GM, Mike...

While I will agree they bumbled pretty much everything into the ground, I'm thinkin (hopin) they finally realized during Chapter 11 that they need to stop manufacturing complete gas guzzling crap if they don't want to be the next formerly US owned member of the Big 3.

Only time will tell....the new malibu (ummmm ....ssshhhhh.... it's actually the Saturn Aura....but i'll leave the Saturn soapboxing for another thread)) seems to be getting good reviews....

As for the low number -- fits in with the recession, I do believe....

Most people buying a car have no intent on returning it unless it's defective -- and I think that goes for ANY car, not just GM vehicles. If a car really sucks that bad, you'd probably notice it on the test drive if you know how to test drive a car (local, highway, smooth roads, potholes, patches, cornering, etc....)

It's a marketing ploy -- but an effective one. Actually they did that with Saturn for years and years......(30 day, 1000 mi).....
