I recently made a post about Toyota and mentioned that the Toyota logo is symbolism. The interlocking ovals represent mutual trust between Toyota and its customers and the open area in the middle implies opportunities for global expansion. At least that is what the Toyota P.R. folks say. To me it still looks like the front view of a steer, but I readily admit that I am not the most perspective person in the world.

I think that the Acura logo, the engineering calipers, is the best statement of what an automobile logo should be. It just says "engineering", and that is what Acura is about. It was only recently that I discovered that while Acura was created in 1986, it did not use the calipers until the introduction of the NSX in '91.

This got me to thinking about other automobile logos and here are a few that come to mind:

* The Lexus symbol says "Less Than" to me.
* The Ford script says "old fashioned".
* The Chevy "Bow Tie" = nerdy. Where are the big rim glasses that go with it?
* Lotus is a bit crowded by the time you add the "ACBC" initials at the top. Those of course stand for the founder, Anthony Colin Bruce Chapman. Good thing he wasn't esquire the III.
* Mitsubishi reminds me of WWII. The three blade logo was the symbol for the Zero during WWII. When the Mitsubshi Starion came out I bought one of the first ones in Georgia. I took it to my father-in-law, a veteran of WWII and at that time working with Ford. He was not pleased with my purchase and his first words were "You know those are the people who shot at me during the war". Some wounds take a while to heal.
* The not too subtle Lamborghini logo with its heavy script and bull on shield is very macho. It is rumored that Ferrucio liked the bull design because it looked stronger than the Ferrari prancing horse on a shield.
* Speaking of Ferrari - to me that too is a beautiful logo, much like the cars. I enjoy seeing aerial views where during Ferrari national events they spell out the logo using red Ferrari's. I guess that was his way of saying "My _ _ _ _ is bigger than yours" to Enzo.
* Infiniti has an appropriate logo that looks like an infiniti mark.

These are a few that impress me for one reason or another. Anyone have others that are especially good or bad?

I've always just seen the Acura logo as an evolution of the Honda logo. You take the top part of the H and squeeze them together, but just so that you leave space so that it is still an H yet looks like an A.

What sets the Acura logo apart is the "caliper" effect. To me it just says "engineering".
