The much talked about Tesla automobile is ready for market. Tesla features a 100% electric motor capable of 0-to-60 in under four seconds and top speed of 125 MPH! It has a two speed tranny with no clutch and a flat torque curve that provides the exhilarating performance. All this and 135 miles per gallon equivalancy for a cost per mile of about two cents.

According to factroy press releases the batteries should be good for approx. 100,000 miles, with quick recharges and no mess. While the batteries take up a little space, the trunk is capable of carrying a set of golf clubs.

Initially five service centers will be offered. If your Tesla needs to see a technician and you live within 60 miles of one (fat chance), pick up is free. If you are outside of that 60 mile radius there will be a "modest fee" for the service.

You will notice a striking resemblance to the Lotus Elise and for a reason. Many of the components are provided by Lotus along with partial assembly in the U.K. Components are sourced from all over the world - the chassis comes from Norway - but final assembly by Lotus & Tesla workers.

All this comes with a price - about $98,000 nicely equiped to be exact. If the price and size does not bother you and you favor sports car performance then the Tesla could be for you. It will be curious to see how the market place accepts this somewhat radical concept and what the effect of depreciation over a few years will bring. Time will tell...
