General Motors has announced that their vehicles equipped with OnStar will have a new feature beginning with the 2009 models. OnStar is adding Stolen Vehicle Slowdown, a technology that prevents a stolem car from accelerating once activated by On Star in coordination with police.
All other functions - steering, braking, even OnStar advisor's voice telling the occupant that a police officer will soon be appearing - continue to operate as the vehicle slows to a stop.
I would assume that Acura's with the service will offer the same prevention, but have seen no nemtion of it as of yet.
I recall seeing a report where police targeted an area with many car thiefts. They had a specially equipped vehicle with a hidden camera, an auto lock device and disabeling capability. The car was left in a prominent location with keys and when stolen they would remotely lock the doors and stop it for the police to arrive for the arrest. The video served as proof of intent. While these actions have a tinge of entrapment, it was legal and helped reduce theft once word got arround the criminal community.
