The world's largest jetliner made aviation history yesterday by completing its first comercial flight from Singapore to Sydney.
The Airbus superjumbo can carry 853 passengers in an all-economy configuration, but the operator, Singapore Airlines opted for 471 seats in three classes - 12 suites, 60 business class and 399 economy.
Each suite, enclosed by sliding doors, is fitted with a leather upholstered seat, a table, a 23 inch flat screen TV, laptop internet connections and a range of office software. A separate bed folds up into the wall. Two of the suites can be joined to provide double beds. On the upper deck business class seats can turn into wide flat beds and there is also a bar area.
Suite rates vary, but generally go in the $50,000 range depending upon route, schedules, and demand. (Wonder if there are any 10% off coupons in Conde Naste?) This includes marinated lobster and double boiled chicken soup washed down with Dom Perignon - none of that cheap Mad Dog 20/20 here. Most seats for the inaugural flight were auctioned off on eBay, raising $1.26 million for charity. The highest bidder bought two suites for $100,380!
The Airbus A380 is as tall as a seven story building, with each wing big enough to hold 70 cars. That make it rather hard to hide I assume.
What a way to live...
