My idle control has stopped working, the engine revs up to 1500 rpm, drops down to 500 and revs up again. Advice?

Maybe an electronic air control valve?
Pretty hard to say really.Did you have anyone look at it?

It will also do that if you have a vacuum leak. Check the vacuum hoses on the controls on the firewall. They're easy to miss leaking. You could also do the propane test or carb cleaner test to find the leak.
Good luck. jack

Get yourself a haynes manual or the like, it will be a good table-top aide to your issues. If you want a copy of the FSM for your car, shoot me an email, as I have one.

Dear Jack,
Thank you for responding, I'll try your suggestion(s(.
Meantime, a question:
Previously, I learned if I held out the clutch to keep rpm's at around 500 for 20 or so seconds, the engine would "reset" for one or two weeks at a correct idle.
Causes for this effect?
I find this intriguing as in what would make the change.
If I do it now, (retard the rpm as before) it has no effect, but it worked for several months.
Thanks again, Mike

find yourself a vacume gauge at idle should have 18 to 21 inches of vacume at intake manifold port if you do not have that and is about 13 to 15 you have a vacume leak look for hode that is worn out or cut but do not mess with your clutch you can burn it
