Yesterday oil futures surged to a record $94.00 per barrel and in all likelihood will hit the $100 barrier figure soon. While many and varied factors come into play, the leading causes are a weakening dollar, reduction in capacity, political unrest, weather , and if the Arab Prince wants another palace. They all spell higher prices at the pump. Although Americans have traditionally paid less than world wide averages for fuel (not counting oil producing countries where it is generally very cheap), it still does not sit well with us to see $3.00+ per gallon prices. If the scenario plays out as many economist predict $3.00 will look like a bargain.
Honda forsees a future where very high fuel prices influence automobile buying. (See previous post concerning Honda's emphasis on fuel economy along with products that deliver better mileage). However, I don't see the Acura division at all involved with that segment. If the crunch comes Acura could be at a disadvantage in the market. I hope Acura executives are just being secretative on the subject and they too are working to improve their CAFE rating. This can impact future values of our Acura automobiles.
So the question is, at what cost per gallon would you seriously modify your automotive lifestyle? I think for me it will be the $5.00 mark of possibly slightly less.
