Yesterday oil futures surged to a record $94.00 per barrel and in all likelihood will hit the $100 barrier figure soon. While many and varied factors come into play, the leading causes are a weakening dollar, reduction in capacity, political unrest, weather , and if the Arab Prince wants another palace. They all spell higher prices at the pump. Although Americans have traditionally paid less than world wide averages for fuel (not counting oil producing countries where it is generally very cheap), it still does not sit well with us to see $3.00+ per gallon prices. If the scenario plays out as many economist predict $3.00 will look like a bargain.

Honda forsees a future where very high fuel prices influence automobile buying. (See previous post concerning Honda's emphasis on fuel economy along with products that deliver better mileage). However, I don't see the Acura division at all involved with that segment. If the crunch comes Acura could be at a disadvantage in the market. I hope Acura executives are just being secretative on the subject and they too are working to improve their CAFE rating. This can impact future values of our Acura automobiles.

So the question is, at what cost per gallon would you seriously modify your automotive lifestyle? I think for me it will be the $5.00 mark of possibly slightly less.

Yesterday the price of oil reached another milestone - and not a good one - when it peaked at $98.62 per barrel! $98.62 may not sound like much money until you put it in context. Just as recent as earlier this year it was half that price and the surge can only spell higher prices at the pump and more money for fuel for those of us who tend to drive a lot.

I don't know what the answer is and I don't plan to curtail my driving just yet, but it's going to be interesting to see how it shakes out over the next few months, especially as the winter heating demands are added to the mix.

Can you say "Scooter"? And speaking of "Scooters", don't forget about our contest where we are giving away TWO FREE SCOTERS - and those are looking better all the time! See our home page for details.
