I have bought 2008 Acura TL type S and i have experienced problems when trying to shift in to third gear. It's just sometimes it won't go in and you really have to force it. Some times it will pop back into nuetral and some times it the car will grind gears. I have taken back to the dealer one time and they said that the car was not grinding gears and shifted into third perfectly fine. But i still receive problems with it even when i took it off the lot right after they told me. i have tried to live with it but i just cant take it any more. I had to pay almost $40,000 for this car and should not have to deal with it. I have driven stick since i was 16 and have never had a problem like this with my Chevorlet, Nissan, and Volkswagon. Has anyone experienced this and had a dealer that has fixed this. I want to know what to say so i can get it fixed. I bought mine from Karen Radley Acura in Woodbridge VA

Does the problem occur mostly when you first start driving and before the tranny is warm and well lubricated? Also, does cold weather make it more difficult to shift?
I ask for two reasons - first, on my NSX there was a problem whereby until the transmission had "warmed up" it was difficult to slide into both reverse and second gears. After it was warm all was well. Secondly the situation was more pronounced if the morning weather was a little cold.
I took it to the dealer and there was a problem with the syncronizers and it required the transmission having to be opened and several parts replaced. Fortunately I had an extended warranty (see recent thread pertaining to extended warranties). My warranty covered the transmission work, but it was strongly suggested that "while we are at it and the transmission is open this is an excellent time to replace the clutch with only the cost of the clutch and no labor". I did have them replace the clutch and do a few other little things with my out of pocket cost around $1700 I think.
Back to your problem - soooo, does first start and cold weather have an effect?

P.S. - I once owned a Maserati where no matter what the weather, you wern't going any place until the transmission was warm. It just would not go in gear! It had a ZF transmission - used on many Ferrari's too - and that is their nature.

It happens pretty much the whole time i have had the car since july of 07. whether or not i have been driving for one mile and the car has not had a chance to warm up all the way or twenty miles when it has been ruinning for thirty or more minutes. everytime i drive it happens at least 3 to 4 times.

This car is well under the factory warranty -- I would take it to your local Acura dealer and have one of the techs ride with you on a test drive and see what the tech thinks then.

I experienced trouble with my TL 6 speed today. the notch just above 3rd gear was missed.
I had to shove it higher into 3rd. the throw into 2nd is short but the throw to 3rd is a bit longer and can easily be missed and you end up in neutral.
I just have to be more deliberate into 3rd.

Be gentle with it Brian. We don't want to hurt the tranny.
The first time I went from the 5-speed NSX to the six it felt a little awkward at first but soon became second nature.

I had the EXACT same problem on my Type S. I drove it to the dealership and they told me the same thing. They said that it drives perfectly fine and shifts perfectly in and out of all gears. I told them that I know how to drive a stick shift and never had problems with other manual cars. I also mentioned to them that it's a brand new car still on warranty and it should be shifting with no problems. The service adviser replied by telling me that if I still have problems with it to take it back to them and they will check it out again. BTW my second manual Type-S drives and shifts with no problems, so I guess that it's a manufacturer defect on the other one. But I don't have to worry about it not shifting properly because the car was totaled before I could take it back to the dealership. Here are some pics of why my black Type-S was totaled:

This was a major collision to say the least. Tell me the good news that you were able to walk away.

I too have this problem, I live in FL year round and every 100th shift or so into third gear the gate isnt open and I have to apply pressure to force it in or go back to neutral and in again.... it happens so rare that i know the dealer wont even experience it when they try it so i never took it in.. anyone else have any luck?

there is a service bulletin on this problem for 6speed civics and on accords sure it applys to the tl type s
gotta love those service bulletins....
the key is finding a dealership that admits they exist.....
