Those of us old enough to remember before Carter became President and when the Beatles were just starting used to listen to a folk group called "Peter, Paul & Mary" - sounds biblical dosen't it? Well Mary Travers was the "Mary" in the group and at the time a thin willowy blond. Times have changed and so has no longer little Mary - but she can still sing.
To this day they swear that "Puff The Magic Dragon", one of their top sellers, did not refer to drugs but I'm not convinced. Part of the lyrics are "...little Jackie Paper (as in rolling paper) lover that rascal puff (as in marijuana), and brought him stings and sealing wax and other fancy stuff (as in drug paraphenalia) - but hey, sometime we all need a "little help from our firends".
Anyway it was a good group and it is hard to think that she is 71 years old! While serving in Viet Nam there were two songs that served as our anthem and one was "Reving on a yet plane"...you see most USO groups were from the Phillipines and had a hard time pronouncing certain letters. The other song was "We got to get out of this place" by the Animals.
Thanks for the memories Mary and happy birthday!
