Twenty five years ago this month Honda became the first Japanese automaker to build a car in America. After an extensive search Honda chose Marysville Ohio for the location and they have been building quality vehicles ever since. At the time this was a radical and gutsy move on the part of Honda and some within the automotive world said it would never work. Looks like those pundits were wrong since the nine millionth vehicle will roll off this month. The plant can produce approximately 440,000 vehicles per year from its two lines.

In 2000 NSXPO was held in Ohio - where it was back again this year - and part of the festivities was an inside tour of the Marysville plant. Now my late father-in-law will not like my next remarks, but they are true. Before touring the Marysville facility I had previously toured the Ford plant in Atlanta as that was where my father-in-law worked. The marked contrast between the two plants was amazing and I could certainly see why automobiles from a Japanese manufacturer were held in higher esteme than it's counterpart from the U.S. In deference to my father-in-law I will not go into further detail.

So, happy birthday to Honda's Maryville plant and may there be many more. They build a quality product and it shows.
