If Germany's social democrates have their way the autobahn as we know it may be a thing of the past. The party has recommended that the speed limit be dropped from fuggetaboutit all the way down to 130 kph (81 mph).

The primary reason they want to lower the sped limit is to reduce carbon dioxide output from vehicles.

The autobahns were built without speed limits by the Nazis. After World War II, Germany's influential car industry persuaded lawmakers not to introduce any limit. Understandably German automakers are still in favor of the no speed limit rule and argue that high speeds help them to sell Porsches, Mercedes and BMW's worldwide.

All of Europe is in a frenzy about CO2 emissions. Their greenies make our greenies look like amateurs. The Europeans are trying to legislate drastically reduced CO2 emissions on the car manufacturers. I'm not disputing that the Earth's temperatures are warming, but in my opinion, the issue has become too politicized. Just my humble opinion.

That'd be some serious bs if they limited the Autobahn!

A clean emission burning car is fine and dandy and all.. but theres quite a few other different ways to combat global warming such as recycling. I think the german automakers can still make cars that would still be able to get up to autobahn speeds easily.. just have to get a little clever. Honda makes sufficient 300hp cars that are still ULEV compliant.

I was watching Planet Earth for a little bit on Discovery.. its amazing how temperature fluctuations can affect animals in the Antarctic..
